Oksana's Internship Experience
My name is Oksana Grente, a French student from the University of the French West Indies (Guadeloupe, Caribbean Island). I came to the University of Belize Environmental Research Institute (UB ERI) to complete my Master Thesis in order to obtain my Master Degree in Tropical Forest Ecology. Over the past six (6) months I worked with the Wildlife Team, especially with Dr. Bart Harmsen and Dr. Rebecca Foster, on the subject of jaguar ecology. I used their incredible database of thirteen (13) annual samples from the camera-trapping monitoring they settled in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS), which is the longest deployment ever made in the Americas. I tested different statistical techniques to estimate the jaguar density in the sanctuary and have been able to identify the most likely reliable, precise and accurate method according to these samples. Moreover, this work brought to light the need in conservation to rely on more than one annual sample to have a good estimate of jaguar population density.
This Master Thesis at UB ERI has been a wonderful opportunity to develop my skills in wildlife conservation and to live a very enriching cultural experience. The great expertise of the Wildlife Team allowed me to achieve this crucial step of my student life and I hope to use to the best advantage this experience in the near future.
