The University of Belize Environmental Research Institute (UB-ERI), founded in 2010, was established to strengthen local capacity in environmental research and monitoring. Our team conducts research, training and community engagement, providing data and insights for policymakers, conservationists, and organisations to effectively manage and protect Belize’s natural resources.

Empowering Environmental Stewardship
UB-ERI is dedicated to advancing environmental stewardship in Belize by aligning efforts with national policies and plans. We focus on addressing the country's natural resource management needs through coordinated research, building local research capacity, supporting education and training at undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional levels.

In addition, we actively engage in collaborations at national, regional, and international levels to support research, training, and the implementation of conservation initiatives. With terrestrial and marine science programs, the Institute adopts a holistic "ridge-to-reef" approach, connecting land ecosystems, marine environments, and the communities that depend on these natural resources.
Sustainable Landscapes and Coastal Resilience
With two strategic science programs, Sustainable Landscapes and Coastal Resilience, UB-ERI conducts a wide range of research aimed at supporting sustainable environmental management in Belize. UB-ERI's research efforts focus on key conservation issues such as biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem restoration, climate change adaptation, and sustainable resource use.

With a collaborative approach, the Institute works closely with local and international partners, combining scientific expertise, practical knowledge and community engagement to generate data that informs national policies and conservation strategies.
