ERI Building Capacity in the Establishment and Maintenance of PSPs
In late July, ERI Botanist, German Lopez was in El Salvador where he received 1-week field training in the establishment of Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs) within agroforestry systems. The training was led by the coordinator of CATIE-El Salvador, Mauricio Scheelje and included participants from CATIE branches in Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Having been possible through ERI/CATIE partnership, the training allowed German to be involved in the establishment and measurement of sixteen plots within agroforestry areas in the departments of San Vicente and Usulutan.
ERI/CATIE partnership has led to ERI’s increased capacity in work with PSPs.Once again, through this continued partnership, German along with Database Administrator, Nicole Weatherburne travelled to Flores, Peten where they participated in a training workshop in the use and management of a new database program, DATALATIF. DATALATIF is a software developed by Centro Agronómico de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) to facilitate improved management of Permanent Sampling Plot (PSP) data of tropical forests mainly for the countries in the Mesoamerican region. The workshop, funded by Finnfor/CATIE taught how to transfer data into the software and perform preliminary processing of existing information collected from PSPs. The 3-day workshop ran from the 7th to 9th of August.
