Exploring Sea Cucumber Aquaculture

Dr. Arlenie Rogers, Sea cucumber lead researcher and marine research fellow at the UB ERI recently attended a sea cucumber aquaculture training at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico.

This training which stemmed from the stakeholders meeting organised by Dr. Rogers in July, was funded by the private sector through an upcoming initiative to explore sea cucumber aquaculture in Belize. Attending the training were shrimp farm managers Mr. John Sansone and Mr. Eric Pixabaj and UB ERI student volunteer Giselle Mahung.

The training included sea cucumber feeding, feed preparation, tank cleaning, algae culture for juveniles and broodstock, spawning induction, artificial fertilization, broodstock harvest and hatchery conditions.

UB ERI appreciates and welcomes this type of partnership and thanks our Mexican colleagues, Dr. Miguel Olvera and team for granting this training opportunity.
