Building Capacity of Natural Resources Managers
The University of Belize Environmental Research Institute (UB ERI) in partnership with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University have successfully implemented the final workshops under the “Environmental Governance and Conflict Management in Belize” Project. The goal of the project was to build capacity within the natural resource management sector by equipping participants with creative and successful problem solving, facilitation, engagement, group development, mediation, advocacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and the public sector benefited from the 2 Conflict Resolution and Negotiation workshops held in March. The first was conducted during the week of March 13-17, 2017 at the La Milpa Field Station and the second over 2 weekends from March 11-12 and 18-19, 2017 at Kiki Witz and the George Price Centre for Peace and Development, respectively. During the week of March 13-17 a total of 14 persons were present for all 5 days of the workshop. The weekend training held from March 11-12 and 18-19 was specifically designed to meet the needs of CBOs that could not attend training during the week. A total of 21 persons attended, with 18 receiving certificates of completion. A total of 35 individual participants attended both workshops.
The workshops were facilitated by Syracuse University Professors, Catherine Gerard and Dr. Peter Castro. The co-facilities were UB faculty members, Dr. Pio Saqui and Mr. Rudolph McKoy.
A series of engaging activities were used to cover the following topics during the workshops:
Leadership and Communication
Conflict Management Approaches in Action
Collaborative Natural Resource Conflict Management
Mediation, Negotiation and Building Agreements

Since the start of the project in 2015, a total of 96 persons have been trained in Conflict Resolution and Negotiation. As the project comes to a close, 2 UB faculty members and UB ERI’s Training Officer are expected to receive further training from Syracuse University in the coming months as we continue to build local capacity.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the workshop participants, Syracuse University Maxwell School and the Oak Foundation for funding this project.
