Biography

Wilbert Castillo is a Marine Biologist and Data Scientist at the University of Belize Environmental Research Institute (UB ERI) and a GOAP Fellow supporting Belize’s work on ecosystem condition accounts. With more than six years of experience in marine conservation and tourism, he has strong, hands-on field expertise and a deep connection to Belize’s coastal and marine environments. His work focuses on collecting and interpreting ecological data to help guide smarter decisions about how the country manages its ocean and natural resources.

Wilbert believes Belize still maintains a strong and meaningful connection with nature, which encourages our people to be responsible environmental stewards. He approaches his work with that mindset, using science to support communities, protect ecosystems, and strengthen national capacity for marine research and environmental accounting. Looking ahead, he hopes to help build long-term monitoring systems and data-driven approaches that safeguard the country’s marine ecosystems while supporting the people who depend on them. When he’s not in the field or working on datasets, you’ll likely find him diving, hiking, traveling, or spending time outdoors with family and friends.

“I am happiest whether I'm underwater surveying a reef, exploring a new trail, or discovering a place I've never visited. These experiences keep me grounded and continually remind me of the value of Belize’s natural heritage.”
