"Think Green, Act Smart": at UB Science Open Day 2024

Last week, the University of Belize Environmental Research Institute (UB-ERI) had the privilege of participating in the University of Belize’s Science Open Day under the theme "Think Green, Act Smart." Staying true to our mission of strengthening local environmental research and monitoring capacity, we were honoured to engage with students of all levels, sharing insights about our work and challenging their knowledge through interactive biodiversity games.

One of the highlights of the day was fostering dialogue on environmental priorities through our “Web of Concern” activity. Visitors shared their top environmental concerns, reflecting on pressing issues and pinning their responses on our interactive web.

With over sixty responses, these concerns were grouped into six key categories: biodiversity loss, climate change, governance, habitat loss, overexploitation, and pollution. Notably, once categorised, pollution emerged as the top concern, closely followed by climate change. As we all continue to work toward solutions for these critical issues, we encourage the public to reflect on this year’s Science Fair theme and embrace actions that “Think Green, Act Smart.”
