We are proud to share that the University of Belize Environmental Research Institute (UB-ERI) has been awarded a youth-led climate and biodiversity grant for an exciting new initiative: “Our Creek: Exploring Community Climate Change Visions for Mt. Pleasant Creek in Belmopan.”

Led by Elsy Perez, Darrel Cansino, and Ashira Rancharan, this project will empower young people and community residents to engage with Mt. Pleasant Creek as a vital ecological and cultural resource within Belmopan.

The initiative will:

·      Engage Belmopan communities in citizen science and climate education

·      Document local perspectives on biodiversity, climate change, and nature-based solutions

·      Promote stewardship and awareness through participatory workshops and creative outreach

·      Produce a community-driven report on the value and future of Mt. Pleasant Creek

Running from June to October 2025, the project puts youth leadership and community knowledge at the heart of local climate action.

Congratulations to Elsy, Darrel, and Ashira on this achievement. We extend our thanks to Belmopan City Council, in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies, for supporting this opportunity and enabling young environmental leaders to drive local climate action.
