On the 27th and 28 July, University of Belize student volunteers participated in a two-day workshop for the WWF’s National Mangrove Restoration Plan. Organised by UBERI, WWF and led by Kevin Novelo, the volunteers received training on both the theory and practical skills needed to collect and verify data on mangrove health. This initiative supports Belize’s goal to protect 12,000 hectares and restore 4,000 hectares of mangroves by 2030. Volunteers learned to identify mangrove species, use GPS devices, and record ecophysiology data, in preparation for a month of data collection at potential mangrove restorations sites across Belize. Their efforts are vital in helping Belize achieve its environmental targets.
